9 basics of good health: what, why and where to find them
Good health starts with a few basics. This chart sums up each one in 3 questions: what it is, why it matters and where to find it.
Main nutrients
- Protein — a key part of the body's structure, including muscle; helps you feel full and provides energy. Found in meat, poultry, fish, dairy, eggs and beans.
- Carbohydrates — the main energy source for the brain and body. Found in fruit, vegetables, grains, beans, wholegrain bread, cereal and pasta.
- Fat — an energy source and part of cell walls and hormones. Found in olive oil, avocado, egg yolk, sea fish, nuts and seeds.
- Fibre — the part of plant foods that helps digestion. Found in fruit, vegetables, seeds, peas, lentils and whole grains.
Micronutrients and plant compounds
- Vitamins and minerals — needed for growth and for cells to work. Found in fruit, vegetables, dairy, eggs, meat and grains.
- Phytonutrients — compounds from plants, found in colourful fruit and vegetables, grains, beans and nuts.
Daily habits
- Water — needs differ; the chart suggests about 8 glasses a day and carrying clean drinking water with you.
- Exercise — get your heart pumping; 30 minutes a day is a start, indoors or outdoors, no equipment needed.
- Rest — enough sleep helps you feel refreshed; sleep somewhere comfortable and relaxing.
