How does your digestive tract work? 7 everyday eating and lifestyle habits
The food you eat each day travels through several organs. Based on Herbalife Thailand material, here is how the digestive tract works and some everyday habits that are easy to pick up.
How the digestive tract works
- The digestive tract is made up of several organs, starting with the mouth, where food is chewed
- Food then passes down the oesophagus to the stomach and intestines
- The small intestine is where key nutrients are absorbed
- What's left is passed out of the body as waste
- The gut is also home to a large number of microorganisms
Eating habits
- 1. Eat unprocessed foods such as vegetables, fruit and grains
- 2. Eat high-fibre foods such as vegetables, fruit, beans and grains
- 3. Eat from all five food groups
- 4. Include foods that contain probiotics, or friendly bacteria, such as yoghurt
- 5. Add food for your gut microbes (prebiotics), found in fibre-rich plant foods
Drink water and keep moving
- 6. Drink enough water every day
- 7. Exercise regularly – for example brisk walking or an easy jog
