What is dietary fibre? Adults should get 25 g a day
Fibre is a type of carbohydrate the body can't break down, unlike other complex carbohydrates. Most fibre therefore passes through undigested and provides bulk.
2 types of fibre
- Soluble fibre
- Insoluble fibre
- Eat a mix of both every day
How much per day
- Adults should get 25 g of fibre a day (source: EFSA Journal 2010; 8(3):1462)
- If you eat little fibre now, increase it gradually and drink plenty of water
What to eat
- Soluble fibre is found in broccoli, carrots, apples and oats
- Insoluble fibre is broken down less than soluble fibre and generally passes through the gut largely unchanged
- Sources of insoluble fibre include nuts, beans, leafy vegetables and whole grains
