What are phytonutrients, and why "eat the rainbow"?
The pigments that give fruit and vegetables their bright colours — as well as herbs, spices and whole grains — are naturally occurring plant compounds called phytonutrients.
How much per day
- Eat a balanced diet with at least 5 servings of colourful fruit and vegetables a day
- The guide states this helps you get the nutrients you need, along with phytonutrients from your food
Remember: "eat the rainbow"
- Each fruit and vegetable has its own pigments and phytonutrients
- So eat many kinds of fruit and vegetables, in good amounts and in many colours
An idea from the guide
- Combine several fruits, such as red apple, blueberries, grapes and orange
- Toss them together in a vegetable or fruit salad
